Tea-&-SconesWhat in the world are scones? Besides being a great option to serve with tea, they are simply a sweet biscuit. Scones are easy to make and freeze well for use in the future.

Easy Variations

Scones can be made up in many variations, including Orange Scones, Nut Scones, and Honey Mustard Scones, to name just a few. Using the basic recipe we offer here, you can let your imagination run wild with options for different flavored scones. Our great chef on Whimsical Teapots and Tea Cups, also makes a more healthy variety using whole wheat flour instead of white flour.

Basic Recipe

This simple Basic Scone Recipe makes 24 scones when you cut them into finger food sizes, usually about 2 bites per piece.

  • 6 cups flour
  • 6 ounces raisins
  • 3 ounces sugar
  • 6 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ to ¾ teaspoon of salt
  • ¼ pound of butter, softened
  • 2 cups of milk

Directions – preheat over to 400 degrees. Mix all ingredients, except milk with your hands. Then add the milk all at once and mix it all well. Knead this mixture about 8 to 10 times and roll it out onto a floured surface until it is about 1 ½ inches thick.

Use a biscuit cutter or your favorite cookie cutter to make shapes. Bake on an ungreased cookie sheet about 25 minutes or until lightly browned.

Toppings for Warm Scones

Basic scones are delightful when served warm topped with butter, jam or your favorite spread. Be sure to make plenty so that you can have some ready to warm up when guests arrive for a spot of tea.

Serving Plates for Scones

I always put my scones on simple serving plates. The food is the star at my tea parties, not the plates. When I use flavor variations and toppings, the scones have a delightful color all their own. Then a simple white serving dish shows them off. A little bit of accent color to match my party theme is all I need to make any one of these plates double as part of my decor.
